Before you decide on buying plasma television make sure to first understand the history behind this particular kind of television. There are no doubts as to the fact that these televisions are truly remarkable and from the time that the first plasma television hit the market till the present a lot of changes have taken place though it must be said that the plasma television was born not just to provide an enhanced television viewing and more particularly for better sports viewing; it was born as an offshoot of the computer screen.

Not A New Concept

Actually, the concept of the plasma television is not all that new because the idea to create a television to provide outstanding viewing pleasure has been around for a long time. As early as the year 1964 the University of Illinois gave birth to the plasma television by recognizing that the computer monitors of the day could easily double up as simplified television screens. In those days televisions ran on the cathode ray tubes that needed to refresh them continuously in order to provide a correct display.

This worked well with computer screens but was a problem when it was tried on televisions and the former in fact lacked in providing desirable resolution. It took the entire year (1964) before the first plasma monitor could be developed to overcome the problem with resolutions. What’s more, those plasma monitors were a far cry from modern plasma televisions that have many million cells that give the television its outstanding color as well as resolution. The first plasma monitor surprisingly had just a single cell though it did represent a major advance and was a step in the right direction.

The competition for the plasma television continues to come from the liquid crystal display (LCDs) that are widely accepted and this competition has in fact had an adverse effect on plasma television production that had to be put on hold till it could be fast forwarded after the flat screen first came out.

Nevertheless, plasma television continues to impact the way that we are now viewing television programs and now that HDTV is here to stay, this kind of television has certainly gained a lot in terms of popularity. Panasonic plasma televisions are a good example and are in fact very popular today and part of the reason for this popularity lies in the excellent quality of image that Panasonic has been able to provide in its different models. Panasonic has been able to provide excellent colors and in terms of brightness and contrast as well as image clarity they are second to none and so are well worth a second look.
