How To Connect Laptop to Flat Screen LCD HD Plasma TV

Explaining how to use your flat planel TV as a computer monitor. The video came out longer than I expected, but I tried to touch all subjects that had been asked in forums that I’ve read. Some editing glitches bc I had to shorten it up to fit the 10 minute time frame. Enjoy…. Also, I used a Samson C01u USB mic & SONAR 6 LE to record the audio for this video. Just letting people know in case you were wondering how well the mic works.

can u use an HDMI cables to from the computer to the plasma TV?

  4. winMillz Says:

If your computer has a DVI output you can. You can get a DVI to HDMI cable. It will give you better image quality, but I just use the VGA method bc it looks good and is the easiest and most cost effective way…I think some computers may have their own HDMI ports now, but be aware that HDMI cables are kind of expensive.

You should have spent more time discussing the resolutions when using HDTVs. There’s no point in buying a TV that supports 1920 x 1080 and reducing it to 800 x 600. You need a video card that supports the native resolution of the TV for it to look clear and crisp.

For anyone out there with an HDTV that uses 1920 x 1080, set your resolution the same.

your video is very helpful. how many cables do I need to connect my laptop to my LCD? You showed only 1 cable which is VGA. How about the S-video? Do I need it? I’m planning to buy laptop next year and I’ll followed what you showed. Any suggestion what brand of laptop is the best? Hoping to hear from you. Again thank u.

Thank you. This is exactly what I was wondering about and you are a great instructor !

    thanks

You only need the one VGA cable. S- video is an alternative to the VGA, but it will have a lower quality picture…Also, if you’re planning to buy a new laptop next year chances are the operating system will be Windows 7, so there may be a different way to connect to the TV than described in this vid (i’m using Windows XP)…it may even be easier!…as far as what laptop, i’ve heard that HP and Toshiba where of pretty good quality. Make sure you get at least 4 gigs of RAM, you’ll be glad u did!

Hey thanks. Everything worked out fine except that for some reason now the TV is #1 and my laptop is #2 and I have just a small screen on my laptop with no icons and no taskbar or start button. How do I get it back to where my laptop is #1 and the tv is #2?

    super helpfull :)

  18. winMillz Says:

I’ve never had that happen before so Im not really sure. I’d just disconnect that vga and restart the computer. That may get it back to how it originally was.

  19. winMillz Says:

No problem. I thought something was wrong with the TV at first since “comp mode” didnt work. Finally tried RGB and there it was! Thanks for watching!

  20. FLDiaz9 Says:

Thanks for your helpful tutorial. Can you tell me if sound is heard through this connection or is another cable needed for sound?

  21. winMillz Says:

No, there is no sound through this connection. The TV just serves as a regular monitor….The sound will still come through you computer’s regular speakers but, for audio I just use my little Logitec 2.1 sound system. Had it since ‘06 and it’s performed pretty well…
